He Will Give You a Sign

signOur Lord does not withhold critical information from us, nor does He require us to play a frustrating game of “Hide and Seek” with the cornerstone of our salvation: Jesus.

God does claim His right to retain and reveal that which He chooses.

The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law.
—Deuteronomy 29:29

But in matters of our salvation, God is very clear. All of Scripture points us to the truth—and to the One who is the way the truth and the life: Jesus!

Signs are clear indicators pointing the way to a destination. In Christianity, as in no other religious practice, we worship a God who seeks us. Our Lord places signs on our path pointing the way to His intended destination for us. God wants us to follow His guiding so we don’t miss the blessings of His Son: Jesus.

The prophets foretell of a specific person, one who would be the Savior of all mankind, an individual whose birth, life, ministry, authority, death and resurrection could only be fulfilled by one man: Jesus.

“God Himself will give you a sign,” the prophet Isaiah tells us in chapter 7 verse 14. “The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call Him Immanuel.”

This babe born in a cave, whose cradle was a feeding trough, would grow up and teach all mankind that “whosoever believeth in me shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).

This child was born to save us from our sins, to set the captives free. It is God’s will that we not miss the signs found in His Word that point the way to everlasting life: Jesus.

His mother, Mary, knew. Mary’s cousin Elizabeth knew. Elizabeth’s son John the Baptist, Jesus’ prophet, knew.

Mary responded to God’s sign given her by way of an angel of the Lord saying, “May it be done to me as you have said” (Luke 1:38). Mary heard God’s Word and recognized the sign she was given. She believed God had chosen her to be the mother of our Lord Jesus.

Elizabeth, “filled with the Holy Spirit” (Luke 1:41), responded to Mary’s visit: “But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me” (Luke 1:43)? Elizabeth’s child, yet unborn leaped for joy at the news that the birth of the one who would bear the sins of the world was immanent: Jesus.

From God’s covenant promise given to Abraham in Genesis 12:1-3 ... “Through you, all nations of the world will be blessed....” God provides promises, prophesies and clear signs for us.

One special being, both God and man would come. “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 6b). “... He will reign on David’s throne ... with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever” (Isaiah 7). His kingdom is eternal. His Word is truth. He is the Son of God, “the way the truth and the life”  and no one may come to the Father but by Him (John 14). Truth, life and the only way to the Father are available in Christ alone, the Messiah, the eternal lover of our souls: Jesus.

God gives us His signs through His Word because “He is patient with us, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9b). Come follow in faith. God Himself has given you a sign. Walk the road leading to salvation in Jesus.
