Slumped over on her couch a flood of tears dripped off her chin and nose. Wiping her face on her sleeve, which she had pulled down over one hand, she lifted her head and looked up. Overwhelmed with grief and pain this young woman truly believed she had nowhere to go, no one in whom she could trust.
This broken young woman is desperate for a trustworthy friend. Her heart longs to be laid bare so she can share the hurt she’s carried inside for too long. Who could ever understand? Trembling and terrified she thought, “But you don’t know what I’ve done, no one does.” Child, you’re not alone ... all of us have turned aside and done that which is evil in the sight of God.
This person, like so many, is drawing conclusions based upon false assumptions: 1) No one will listen. 2) Nobody will understand if they learn what I have done.
There is Someone who understands and is aware of all your deeds: the good, bad and shamefully ugly. There is Someone who will take you in and love you back to life. Accountability will be demanded. Change will be required.
When Solomon built and later dedicated the temple of the Lord, his prayer on behalf of the nation who had committed terrible sins in God’s sight, lifted up Israel in a national confession. The Lord heard. God answered.
If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, pray, seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. —2 Chronicles 7:14 (NRSV)
Dear one, God knows what you have done and what deeply troubles you. Young, old, rich, poor, male or female, the Lord has witnessed every deed of your life—and loves you still. He sent His Son Jesus to die and make satisfaction for all your sins. We cannot un-ring a bell. There’s no going back. But we can move forward! We can step out in faith as a new creation!
So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! —2 Corinthians 5:17 (NRSV)
If anyone (you and me) is in Christ
(believers in the Son of God: Jesus) we are new
creatures; everything old (that which is of the
past) is gone—all is new! Sweet Jesus, what
Good News! Run to Jesus, the Lord and lover of
your soul. He’s waiting with open arms. Confess
your sins before Christ and live in a future no
longer bound or shaped by the past. There’s no
going back—but we can step forward in faith.
Live each new day in the bright hope and love of
Jesus the Christ! As a forgiven child of God,
you now dwell with the God of today, tomorrow
and forever! Amen.
