The weather stations forecasted a snowstorm. That’s precisely what happened. As predicted within an hour or so of the time designated for the flakes to be flying, they were. Those who heeded the warnings were shoveled out and ready for church. For those of us who lead worship, it’s important to be there as scheduled.
The ability to see what’s coming is one advantage the science of weather gives us. Warnings about serious storms and damaging winds, when observed, save lives. That’s a good thing.
Isn’t it odd though, that folks tend to disregard the warning in scripture? We’re told in the gospel of John by Jesus that, “I am the way the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father, but by me.” Jesus doesn’t offer several options to gain eternal life. He provides one, Himself. Yet so many people don’t regard Jesus as anything more than a prophet or religious teacher, whose words are for another people and from another time in history and don’t really apply to us today.
I cannot imagine a more serious mistake. The outcome of ignoring the truth of Christ is tantamount to venturing out in a boat when a hurricane has been forecast. The winds will come, the waves will rise and you will flounder and sink.
The warnings for us in scripture aren’t there to frighten us. God warns us because He loves us. In the same gospel Jesus tells us, “I go to prepare a place for you, and I will return to take you to myself. So that where I am you may be also.”
In the gospel of Matthew, Jesus tells Nicodemus, “Unless one is born again you cannot obtain the kingdom of heaven.”
As warning is a word of caution, loving instruction from a caring, merciful Savior. Be not afraid, but listen and take heed to what the Bible says. Each word that has been spoken by the prophets has come to pass. Every word about future events will also come to pass.
Just as sure as a radar image of a large snowstorm moving in your direction will eventually arrive, so too will God’s time bring about the end of days. Jesus will return.
Jesus' return is not a matter of science. It is a solid faith in the God of promises kept. God doesn’t lie. God doesn’t exaggerate. God doesn’t make stuff up to keep us in line. God tells us the truth about life, death, and how we should approach each of these inevitable states of existence. God has made it clear that time will end, Christ will return and gather His people to Himself. I pray that will include me, and you. I for one intend to heed the Word of truth God has set before me. I believe In Jesus, our risen Lord. I have accepted Christ as my Savior. If you would like to know more about the gift of forgiveness and the promise of eternal life, email me. I’d be pleased to pray with you. But, whatever you do—don’t ignore the warnings. Look forward to eternal life in Christ!
