A Plea from the Pastor's Wife

by Margaret Hartnett

What a privilege it is to be placed, as I am
To bless, help and encourage a godly man,
To be given by God many blessings from above
To train and admonish, to nurture and love.

Called to be an example to God’s precious flock
What a shame that some seem to find it a shock
That the family of the pastor has not yet arrived
At that state of perfection, to which we all strive.

Let us consider for a moment of how it would be
If our places were changed for some days - let’s say three,
Would they find there are pressures they’d not previously known?
Would they be humbled by the things they are shown?

Would they find an increase in enemy activity,
Pastors are a target for the devil you see -
He hates to find men submitted to the Lord
Who resist his advances, armed with God’s Word.

Would they find they are called to fast, or pray, more
To be aware of the needs in the flock they care for;
Would they find they now need to cope on less sleep
When the phone, in the night, sometimes goes beep-beep-beep?

Would they find that their children require training too,
That they need the rod just as others all do.
All babes are born wicked, telling lies and worse -
Why think pastors’ children are exempt from this curse?

But just to assure you, we really believe
That a godly example we need to be;
By the grace of the Lord our children won’t stray
If we’re faithful to train them all every day.

They all mature at a different rate,
Some blossom early, some come forth late,
But little by little, line upon line
All will bear fruit in the Lord’s own time.

We all need to stop and consider our ways
In our salvation we walk trembling each and every day
Remembering to esteem others, and Jesus above all
Taking heed to ourselves, lest by some chance we fall.
