Thoroughly Clean

cleaningI've done my spring house cleaning
I vacuumed, washed, and swept
I organized and sorted things—
Some were discarded, others kept.

I scrubbed, polished, and dusted
I laundered and I dried
I wiped down all the cobwebs
From places where they hide.

Then I found that I needed
A thorough spring cleaning, Lord
In my heart, my soul, my life
Of thought and deed and word.

I kept those things that edify
And what tears down I discarded
Whenever I think I’m finished
I realize I’ve just started.

Lord, there’s only so much
Self-cleaning that I can do
To purify my heart and soul
I must rely on You.

For You alone can wash me clean
Like snow and make me white
Clothed in a robe of righteousness
I am pure in Your sight.
