Easter crossesJust Because He Loved Me
by Carol A. Penhorwood

A disgraceful execution,
An agony of pain,
And just because He loved me
He willingly was slain.

And just because He loved me
Desertion He endured,
He faced the horrors of that day,
Alone my grace procured.

Humiliation and defeat,
The thorns upon His brow,
The mockery, the taunts, the jeers,
That I might know Him now.

And just because He loved me
The spikes, the fiery pain,
The drops of blood He shed that day
For all that I would gain.

And as He hung there on that cross
The birds of prey would flock,
And insects swarmed His wounds that day
While men around Him mocked.

The agony He bore that day
Both pain and separation,
For God in justice looked away
From sin's abomination.

For all my sins hung on Him there,
The evil I have done,
And just because He loved me
He bore it ... and He won.

Was It I?
by Carol A. Penhorwood

Is it I who bowed His head,
Who nailed Him to the tree,
Who caused His anguish and His pain,
O Lord, could it be me?

Did I crown Him King of glory
Then when hardship came my way,
Did I run with all the others,
Did I fear what people say?

Did I proudly call Him, "Master"
Then proceed upon my own,
Did I crucify My Savior
And then walk my road alone?

Was it my sins that He died for,
My self-centeredness, my pride?
In my arrogance I shunned Him,
Did I cause the tears He cried?

Did my foolish pleasures hang Him,
Could His love I fail to see,
Would He still the cross have chosen
Even if it were just me?
