The title of this book is at once shocking and intriguing. Christianity is, after all, not about how little we can believe in order to squeeze into Heaven’s gates; it’s about a relationship with God. But every sincere Christian yearns to separate the essential from the nonessential—doctrine from mere opinion. This book attempts to do exactly that.
The author, a former Baptist turned United Methodist minister, became close friends with an atheist named Danny. Despite differing theological views, the two maintained a respectful dialogue and eventually Danny softened his views to that of an agnostic. One day he asked, “What’s the least I can believe and still be a Christian?”
It was a sincere question. He was drawn to Christ, but rejected “the way that intolerant Christians package Christianity.”1 This book is Thielen’s response. Continue
