Make Your Own

I've always enjoyed collecting recipes for Make Your Own items. I thought I’d share a few with you. Hope you and your family enjoy them! Be sure to email me your ideas for this column.

spicesHomemade No Salt Seasoning (like Mrs. Dash)

1/4 cup onion powder
1/4 cup paprika
2 teaspoon coarse ground pepper
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon thyme
1 teaspoon basil
1 teaspoon lemon peel
1 teaspoon celery seed
1 teaspoon dill seed

Mix in a bowl with a fork until well blended. Makes 3/4 cup seasoning.
Store in an airtight container.

Homemade “Shake and Bake” style coating mix

2 cups crackers or cereal (crushed)
2 cups flour
1 tablespoon sugar
1 tablespoon paprika
1 tablespoon seasoning salt

Mix in a bowl with a fork until well blended. Makes 4 cups. Store in an airtight container.

Homemade Hot Fudge Sauce

1 14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk (not evaporated milk)
1 14-ounce bottle light corn syrup (Karo)
12 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips
1/4 pound butter (no substitutions)

In top of a double boiler or a heavy saucepan, melt all ingredients. Cook 30 minutes, stirring frequently. Remove from heat and beat with electric mixer for 3 minutes. Cool slightly and place in airtight container. Store in the refrigerator and heat as needed. Mmmmm.

Homemade Yogurt

1 quart warm water
1-2/3 cups non-fat dry milk
1/4 cup commercial yogurt - PLAIN

In a 2-quart casserole dish mix dry milk into warm water. Mix 1/2 cup of this warm milk with the yogurt. Add to the rest of the milk, stirring well. Cover, place in oven. Close door on a folded pot holder to keep the light on and keep in heat. Let set overnight or 10-12 hours.

Swiss Mocha Coffee Mix

1/2 cup instant coffee
1 cup sugar
1 cup instant dry milk powder
1/4 cup powdered coffee creamer
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa
1/4 cup vanilla flavored instant pudding mix

Use a fork to combine everything until well blended. Store in an airtight container.

To Prepare: Measure 3 or 4 tablespoons into a coffee cup. Fill it up with hot water (about 3/4 cup) and stir to dissolve.

This would make a nice gift in a pretty jar!
