“In the beginning…” I began to share the story of creation with my children’s choir. Punctuating the evening’s rehearsal with Bible study is part of our weekly time together. “In the beginning of what?” A young lad’s voice piped up. His and other young eyes studied my face, as I answered, “In the beginning… there [...]

End of My Rope

The last of the blankets and cuddly things had been gathered up as the nurse in the maternity ward handed my youngest of two sons to me. It was time to go home. His big brother Ryan, now four and a half, looked into the face of this sweet gift and then up at me, [...]

“How do you know he’s going to ask me?” Understandably concerned, as any young gal would be, I sought affirmation from a good friend about the intentions of a young lad I truly hoped would ask me to an upcoming school dance. “Well, I’m not so sure,” I said. “Besides, I look like a dork [...]

Expecting

Which one is it? Anxiously I inspected each present that had a gift tag bearing my name, considering the size and weight, shaking and listening for clues. It can’t be any of these. My heart sank. My parents were masters at the art of surprise, especially at Christmas. I had carefully investigated every gaily-wrapped box, [...]

The sunlight twinkled off the surface of a shiny object just ahead of me. A few more blocks and I’ll head for home. The pace of my morning run drew me closer to the sparkling something which caught my eye—I stopped and picked it up. Hmmm. A quarter. Looking around, a young boy began to [...]

Water poured from a pitcher into an empty glass. Stopping midway, my junior high school science teacher asked, “Is the glass half full or half empty?” I thought for a moment and raised my hand. “Yes, Mary.” Straightening up in my chair and clearing my throat, which was now asking my brain what prompted me [...]

Crack! “What was that?” My friend grabbed my hand in our darkened tent. A brief rain had dampened our twilight, marshmallows and sleeping bags. “Something touched me.” I replied, “That was me, silly.” Embarrassed and relieved, “Oh … good,” my friend whispered. Have you ever been scared? Scouts honor, this was one night when the [...]

Solid Rock

My eyes snapped open. “What a dream!” I thought, as it was immediately obvious that this was not my imagination. Everything was quivering, increasing in intensity until all began to shake violently. Sally, my brother’s Golden Retriever, jumped on top of the bed and then on top of me. “Don’t look at me, gal—I’m as [...]

Restoration

“Broken. It’s broken.” My heart wept. Tears dripped off the tip of my nose onto my hand, which held a three-legged ceramic horse. His left front leg lay next to his disfigured body. A wound I caused. “Jack”, I cried out to my oldest brother “look at what happened. My sobs were met with tenderness [...]

In The Master’s Hand

A small fishing boat, lurching and creaking, bobbed in the tide as men lowered lifeless sails and began to pole into the shallows. These men had been tossing nets all night and nothing—not even a nibble. Wet, cold and frustrated, the last word of advice they sought was from their teacher/preacher friend from Nazareth—a carpenter [...]

Pick Up Your Cross

Mom and Dad were seated at the dining room table of our apartment in Greenwich, Connecticut. I could tell by their voices and the looks on their faces that this was a serious conversation. Wearing my footy P.J.’s with the snap flap, hair all tussled and dragging my love worn green rabbit, I shuffled in [...]
