I believe Deuteronomy 6 is very clearly instructing parents to disciple their children. Please read it on your own during your next study. But I would like to bring forth some very important verses on discipling your children.
Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates. —Deuteronomy 6:5-9
To my understanding these are the directions for discipling your children. It is supposed to be an all day event. You do everything with your kids and teach and train them throughout the day. The biblical consistency can be checked by Jesus’ example. He ate with, slept with and taught his disciples 24/7 for 3 years and trained them to be world changers. Christ is our example, and what a model that is! I will have about 18 years with each child and I hope to teach and train them to be world changers!
For Christian parents discipleship should be the #1 priority. I believe we need to prioritize and make sure the most time is spent on the highest priorities. Academics are important, and homeschooled kids academically out-perform all others, but it still remains that discipleship is the highest priority.
What benefit will it be to you if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul?
—Mark 8:36
We need to claim Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”(NKJV). Yes, even homeschooling fits into that. It’s not through your own strengths, patience or other virtues; it’s through Christ that makes it virtuous and blessed.
Another verse that confirms this is 2 Corinthians 12:9:
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.”
I try to focus on things that are good, but the flip side should be evaluated. I believe the deceiver (no he doesn’t deserve my capital letter) is trying to seek, kill and destroy. Oh, how he would love for your children to be indoctrinated by the world. He is the king of lies. Please seek God’s protection from that little voice saying, “You can’t do this. You are not certified. You aren’t good enough.” Any ounce of fear should be evaluated, and declare Philippians 4:13 to those lies. Remember you are a child of the most Holy God. “If God is for us, who can be against us?”(Romans 8:31)
For me, my journey has been blessed and without too many tantrums on my behalf. I find it pure joy to see my kids’ faces light up when they finally get a math problem. I love seeing my daughter light up when she reads a whole page in reading, her most challenging subject. I am there to encourage and equip them to be successful. I love talking about Jesus in history, science, Bible, art, reading; oh, I guess all subjects bring world view and the Creator into them. Discipleship is my job, and it is a joyous, gifted position God has put me in. He will equip me to reach my children’s hearts and minds. I can do it! I think you can too!
